THE SWELL SEASON

Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová

Glen Hansard, front man with The Frames released a collaborative album with Czech singer and pianist Marketa Irglova, The Swell Season (Plateau), on 21 April 2006.

The album was recorded and mixed over 6 days in early December in a studio in Prague. A number of the songs are included in the soundtrack for an Irish film, “Once” (which Glen and Marketa star in). In the last year, the film has won many awards – among them the audience award at Sundance film festival. The music from the film has been nominated for two Grammys and, ‘Falling Slowly’, which features in the film has just been nominated for an Oscar.

All of the film’s activities has kept Glen and Marketa more than busy over this past year, and with the Oscar nomination, things don’t look likely to let up any time soon. They are expected to tour America again in the spring as well as Europe and record another album of songs together.

Glen Hansard is the frontman of The Frames (one of Ireland’s most successful bands). He is renowned for his idiosyncratic approach to making and performing music. He has also been at the forefront of a host of other projects – including presenting the first series of RTE’s Other Voices, releasing and touring the collaborative The Swell Season album with Czech pianist/vocalist Marketa Irglova, and starring in the film Once which was made by ex-Frames bass player John Carney and released at the beginning of 2007.

The Frames released their 6th studio album, The Cost, in Ireland on their own Plateau label in September (Europe followed in October on the Anti label). It went straight into the album charts at No 2. The Cost receives a U.S. and Australian release in February 2007.

After nearly a decade of highs and lows with a variety of labels The Frames finally started reaping their just rewards when they began releasing records on their own label in their own way. Since then all of their albums have achieved at least Double Platinum status sales (“Set List” and “For The Birds” have now exceeded Quadruple Platinum sales!). The band continue to play sold out shows everywhere from The Point to Marlay Park.
